Worms, glorious worms

One of the challenges of farming organically on a small-scale in Ireland is sourcing feeds. Right now, it is more cost-effective for us to import organic chicken feed from England, than it is to go to one of the handful of Irish firms who supply to small-scale producers. Bonkers.

So we’ve been exercising our heads over the question of how to reduce costs, and improve the quality of our produce at the same time.

Enter the worm farm. It might not look like much at the moment, but we’re hoping that our modest two kilos of worms from The Worm Works in Dromara will have multiplied into a thriving community of 30,000 come the end of the year, with enough wormy action to start feeding them to our chooks come spring. One step closer towards truly local food, we hope.
